§ How Connecticut calculates support

Connecticut uses the Income Shares Model on both parents' combined ADJUSTED NET weekly income, looking up the basic obligation in the Schedule of Basic Child Support Obligations (Regs. § 46b-215a-2c) and allocating it by each parent's income share. Health insurance, unreimbursed medical, and work-related childcare are added on top and split proportionally. The guideline schedule caps at $4,000/week combined net (rising to $6,000/week on Aug. 1, 2026); above that, support is set case-by-case.

How to open or modify a case in Connecticut

  1. Calculate each parent's gross weekly income from all sources.
  2. Subtract allowed deductions (taxes, FICA, health insurance, court-ordered support, union dues) to get adjusted net weekly income.
  3. Add both adjusted net incomes to get combined net weekly income.
  4. Look up the basic obligation in the Schedule of Basic Child Support Obligations by combined income and number of children.
  5. Add health insurance, unreimbursed medical, and childcare costs, then split the total by each parent's percentage share of combined income.
  6. The noncustodial parent pays their share (the custodial parent's share is presumed spent directly on the child).

Illustrative examples

Illustrative example
Illustrative example - combined $1,000/week net, 1 child, 60/40 split

Scenario: Parent A adjusted net $600/wk, Parent B $400/wk; combined $1,000/wk; one child. Schedule basic obligation = $229/week.

Walk-through: Parent A earns 60% of combined income, so pays 60% x $229 = $137.40/week (about $595/month), plus 60% of add-on costs.

Takeaway: The schedule gives the total basic obligation; the paying parent covers only their proportional share.

? Frequently asked questions

What income counts in Connecticut?
Broad gross weekly income minus a defined list of deductions (taxes, FICA, health insurance, existing support, union dues). The list is exhaustive.
Does shared custody automatically lower support?
No fixed overnight formula; courts find 'shared physical custody' case-by-case when time is substantially equal, and a deviation is not automatic.
